This is a booking option for a 3 day Forge to Finish Knife Making class at my shop in Quapaw, Oklahoma where you will learn how to forge a knife from an 7” piece of knife steel bar stock in the duration of 3 days. The student must be comfortable around power tools and a propane forge With temperatures in excess of 2600° F. This is an adult (18 or older) class however minors 13 and above may take the class with parent’s signature. All students are required to sign a liability waiver. Day 1 consists of forging the knife to shape using a hammer at the anvil and then cleaning up the profile of the knife on the belt sander. After the blade has been cleaned, pin holes in the tang (handle) will be drilled. The student will then grind in their bevels on the belt sander before the knife will be heat treated and oil quenched for hardness. The instructor will then place the knife in a tempering oven following the end of day 1.
Day 2 consists of cleaning the post heat treat scale on the belt sander and the construction and application of the handle. The knife handles will be applied with overnight curing epoxy.
Day 3 consists of sanding and shaping the handle on the belt sander followed by ascending stages of sanding and hand sanding until the handle is finished. The final edge will then be ground into the blade and the student has a fully finished blade to take home.
